Website Security & Malware Cleanup

Hacked Website? We Clean It And Lock It Down

It usually starts with a message from a customer. Your site is showing a red warning, redirecting to something strange, or Google has put “This site may be hacked” under your business name. Send it to us. We remove the malware, get the warnings lifted, close the door it came through and keep watching so it doesn’t happen again.

The Unfair Advantage

Why A Hacked Site Gets Worse Every Day You Wait

Did you know? Most hacked websites were never targeted. They were simply out of date, and a bot found them.

Attackers don’t sit there choosing you. They run scripts that scan millions of sites for a plugin with a known hole, and when they find one, the script does the rest. It plants spam pages selling things you have never heard of, hides redirects that send your visitors to scam sites, and leaves a back door so it can come back after you “fix” it. All of this can be happening while your home page looks completely normal to you.

Then Google finds it. Google crawls your site constantly, and when it sees malware or spam, it flags the site in Safe Browsing. That is the red “Deceptive site ahead” screen in Chrome, and the “This site may be hacked” label under your listing in search. Visitors stop clicking, rankings slide, email from your domain starts landing in junk and your ad accounts can be suspended. The clean-up is the same job on day one and day ten. What you lose in between is not.

Clean Up My Website

Advantage #1

Clean It Properly, Not Just The Part You Can See

The obvious symptom, the redirect or the spam page, is rarely the whole infection. The same script that planted it usually left a few more files behind, a fake admin user and a line or two in your theme that lets it back in. Delete the symptom and it is back in a week. We have cleaned enough of these to know where to look.

We start by taking a full copy of the site as it is, so nothing is lost. Then we go through every file and compare it against clean copies of WordPress, your theme and your plugins, remove what doesn’t belong, check the database for injected links and scripts, and remove any user accounts you didn’t create. Then we scan again, with more than one tool, because one scanner never catches everything.

Can you do this with a plugin? Sometimes, but a scanner running on a hacked site is running on the hacker’s turf, and it is the first thing a good infection disables. The clean-up has to be done from outside the site, by someone who knows what a clean WordPress file looks like.

Advantage #2

Get The Google Warning Lifted

Once the site is clean, the warning doesn’t simply disappear. Someone has to tell Google, through Search Console, that the problem is fixed and ask for a review. We do that for you, with the clean-up documented, and we handle the other blocklists too, the ones that affect email and antivirus software, which most people don’t know exist until their emails stop arriving.

Google’s review typically takes a few days once requested, and it only passes if the site is genuinely clean. That is why we don’t request it on day one. A failed review makes the next one slower. We request it when we are sure, and we keep an eye on it until the warning is gone.

Advantage #3

Close The Door So It Doesn’t Happen Again

A clean site that is still out of date is a clean site for about a week. So the last part of the job is finding how they got in and making sure that way is closed. Usually it is an abandoned plugin, an old theme, a password that was used on five other sites or a hosting account that was never updated.

We update everything, remove what you don’t use, reset every password, add two-factor login for admins, put a firewall in front of the site through Cloudflare and Wordfence, and set up daily backups you can roll back to. If you move onto our hosting and maintenance plan afterwards, all of that becomes our job every month, and it comes with our Hacked Website Guarantee, which you will find further down this page.

Honestly, the clean-up is the part people pay for, but the hardening is the part that saves them money.

Who It's For

Who This Is For

If any of these sound like you, send us the link today rather than tomorrow. Every day it stays up costs a little more.

  • Your Site Is Showing A Warning

A red “Deceptive site ahead” screen in Chrome, a “This site may be hacked” label in Google, or your antivirus blocking your own website.

  • Your Site Redirects Somewhere Strange

Visitors land on a pharmacy, a casino or a “your computer is infected” page, sometimes only on mobile, sometimes only from Google, so you never see it yourself.

  • Your Emails Are Bouncing

Messages from your domain land in junk or bounce outright, because the hack put your domain on a spam blocklist. The website and the email are the same problem.

  • Agencies With A Client Emergency

A hacked client site and nobody on the team who does this. We clean it quietly in the background while you keep the client relationship. If that is you, we might just be your guy.

Our Cleanup Process

How We Clean And Secure Your Website

Fully remote, in any time zone. Because these are usually urgent, we move as soon as the quote is accepted.

  1. 01

    Send Us The Link

Honestly, this is the simplest step for you. Send us the link, what you are seeing and where the site is hosted, and we take a look. You get back what we think happened, what it will take to fix and one fixed quote. If the site turns out not to be hacked and it is something simpler, like an expired certificate or a broken plugin, we will tell you that instead and quote the smaller job.

  2. 02

    Backup & Investigate

Before we touch anything, we take a full copy of the site and the database exactly as it is. Then we find the infection: which files were changed, what was added, which user accounts shouldn’t exist and, most importantly, how they got in. Knowing the entry point is what makes the difference between a clean-up that lasts and one you will be paying for again in a month.

  3. 03

    Clean & Verify

Every file is compared against clean copies of WordPress, your theme and your plugins. Anything that doesn’t belong is removed, the database is cleared of injected links and scripts, fake users are deleted and back doors are closed. Then we scan again, with more than one tool, and click through every page type on the site to make sure it works and nothing strange is left behind.

  4. 04

    Harden & Protect

WordPress, plugins and themes are updated and anything unused is removed, because every abandoned plugin is another way in. Every password is reset, admin accounts get two-factor login, file permissions are tightened, and Cloudflare and Wordfence go in front of the site as a firewall. Daily backups are set up so there is always a clean point to go back to. This is the part that saves you money.

  5. 05

Lift The Warnings & Keep Watching

When we are sure the site is clean, we request the review in Google Search Console, with the clean-up documented, and submit to the other blocklists that affect email and antivirus software. Google’s review typically takes a few days, and we follow it until the warning is gone. Most clean-ups are done typically within a few days of getting access. After that, if you join our hosting and maintenance plan, monitoring and daily scans become our job, and the site is covered by our Hacked Website Guarantee.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. If yours is not here, just ask.

How Do I Know If My Website Has Been Hacked?
The usual signs are a red warning in Chrome, a “This site may be hacked” label under your Google listing, visitors being redirected to strange pages, search results for products you don’t sell, admin users you didn’t create, or your emails suddenly bouncing. Sometimes there is no visible sign at all and your host or Search Console tells you first. If you are not sure, send us the link and we will check.
Why Is Google Showing A “Deceptive Site Ahead” Warning?
Google crawls your site constantly. When it finds malware, hidden spam pages or redirects to scam sites, it flags your domain in Safe Browsing, which Chrome and most other browsers use. The red screen is Google protecting your visitors from your site. It stays until the site is clean and a review has been requested through Search Console and passed. We do both.
How Long Does Malware Cleanup Take?
Most clean-ups are done typically within a few days of getting access to the site, with the backup, investigation and hardening included. Google’s review typically takes a few more days once we request it, and we only request it when we are sure the site is clean, because a failed review slows the next one down.
Will I Lose My Content Or My Design?
No. We take a full backup before anything changes and the site is cleaned in place. Your pages, posts, images and design stay as they were. What goes is the code that shouldn’t be there, along with any users and plugins you didn’t add.
Can’t I Just Restore A Backup?
Only if the backup is from before the infection and the hole it came through is closed. Most people don’t know when the hack happened, so the backups they have are often infected too, and restoring one without fixing the entry point means it comes straight back. A restore can be part of the fix, but it is rarely the whole fix.
Does The Hacked Website Guarantee Cover My Site?
The Hacked Website Guarantee applies to websites on our hosting and maintenance plan: if a site on the plan is ever compromised, we clean it and get it back up at no cost, unless access to the site wasn’t kept secure on your side. A one-off clean-up is quoted as a job. Many people move onto the plan once their site is clean, and from then on it is covered. See the Hosting & Maintenance Plan.
Can You Clean A Site Hosted Anywhere?
Yes. We clean sites on any host, and we don’t need you to move to do it. If the host itself is part of the problem, for example an account that has been suspended or a server that was never updated, we will say so and recommend a move. Otherwise the site stays where it is.
How Do I Stop It Happening Again?
Keep WordPress, plugins and themes updated, remove what you don’t use, use a strong password that isn’t used anywhere else, turn on two-factor login for admins, keep a firewall in front of the site and keep daily backups. We set all of that up as part of the clean-up. The hard part is keeping it up every month, which is exactly what our hosting and maintenance plan does.

Our Guarantees

Promises We Put In Writing

We would rather work for free than see an unhappy client. These are the guarantees every project comes with.

A Fixed Quote, Even In An Emergency

Being hacked is stressful enough without an open-ended bill. You get one fixed price before we start, and it covers the clean-up, the hardening and the warning removal. If we open the site up and it is worse than it looked, that is our problem, not yours. We would rather do the extra work for free than see a client stuck with a broken site and a surprise invoice.
